🦄 How to Safely Tie in Our Tail Bags 🦄
Tail bags are a handy way to help keep your horse’s tail clean, protected, and out of the way of everyday mess. Because no one loves brushing poop out of a tail.
We’ll have a video showing how to tie in our tail bags coming soon, but for now, here’s a simple guide to help you use them safely.
Before we get started, the most important rule is: Tail bags should always be tied into the hair of the tail only - never around the dock or tailbone.
Tail bags should also be removed and checked regularly to make sure they have not slipped, twisted, tightened, rubbed, or become tangled.
How to Tie in Our Slinky Tail Bags
Option 1 — Easy Method:
This is the simplest way to tie in your tail bag.
- Start with a clean, dry, and detangled tail.
- Plait the tail below the dock, or braid if preferred.
- Secure the plait with one or two elastic bands.
- Slip the tail into the tail bag.
- Thread the ties through the plait, below the dock.
- Tie the ties firmly enough that the bag stays in place, but not so tight that it causes pulling, rubbing, or discomfort.
Option 2 — More Coverage Method:
This method gives a little more coverage, but is slightly trickier.
- Braid the tail from the top of the dock to the bottom of the tail.
- Secure the braid with one or two elastic bands.
- Slip the tail into the tail bag.
- Thread the ties through the outer sections of hair near the top of the braid. The ties should pass from behind the braid, but in front of the dock.
- Tie securely to the hair only.
- Do not tighten the ties around the dock.

Tail bags should be removed and checked regularly to make sure they have not slipped, twisted, tightened, rubbed, or caused any discomfort.
Remove the tail bag if it becomes loose, damaged, tangled, filthy, or if your horse shows signs of rubbing or irritation.
Safety Notes
- Do not leave a tail bag on for long periods without checking it.
- Do not tie the bag too tightly.
- Do not attach the bag above or around the tailbone.
- Always secure the bag to the hair only.
- Remove the bag if your horse is rubbing, irritated, or if the bag becomes loose or tangled.
- Supervise use in paddocks, especially around fences, trees, or other objects the bag could catch on.
